Thinking Small...

There are small-house blogs, websites and organizations such as the Small House Society. There are books like Little House on a Small Planet (Lyons Press) by carpenter and designer Shay Salomon and The Not So Big House (Taunton) by architect Sarah Susanka, and a growing number of mainstream resources teaching people they can live in less space and have more time to enjoy it.

America's poor are its most generous givers

"The lowest-income fifth (of the population) always give at more than their capacity," said Virginia Hodgkinson, former vice president for research at Independent Sector, a Washington-based association of major nonprofit agencies. "The next two-fifths give at capacity, and those above that are capable of giving two or three times more than they give."

Indeed, the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics' latest survey of consumer expenditure found that the poorest fifth of America's households contributed an average of 4.3 percent of their incomes to charitable organizations in 2007. The richest fifth gave at less than half that rate, 2.1 percent.

Community Garden Project

Thank You to Georgia Poker Club

Another big thanks to Dee Simbro and The Georgia Poker Club for having The Stable Foundation as the recipient of their Regional Tournament fundraiser. Almost $1,300 was raised, money that will go to housing Family 11.

February of 2008, The Georgia Poker Club raised enough funds to allow TSF to place Family #1.

TSF is so honored to have people who care in our community, enough to come out and volunteer, or donate money, or even become more aware of the issues and see how they can help.

Thank You Lindsay Group

Big thanks to Lindsay Group who volunteered to help install a community garden at Westside Heights Apartments last Saturday.

Everyone moved an entire load of topsoil up a pretty good incline to reach the planting area.

We were joined later by poker player volunteers as a second shift.

Thanks also to Rachel and Steve at Westside Heights, and to the folks who live and now garden there for helping put in the herbs, and blueberry bushes.

There are even rain barrels to collect water.
